The city of Haskovo is situated in South Bulgaria. The proximity to the borders with Turkey and Greece determines the important geographic position of the city. Through the region passes the fastest way connecting Europe with Asia and Near East.The seven thousand years history of Haskovo region makes it one of the oldest settlements in Bulgaria.The archeological excavations show that the area has been inhabited during the ages because of the mineral springs in the vicinity. There are also remains of ancient fortresses. “Kaleto” fortress is one of the best-preserved historical monuments in the region. It was built by the Romans during the 2-nd century to protect the settlement from invasions. The so-called “Sharapani” – Thracian wineries are preserved till nowadays. They were carved in the rocks, close to each other with different depths, connected with chutes. The Thracians used them to produce wine.The temperate climate with a slight Mediterranean influence, the warm summer, sandy-clay soils together with the average annual rainfall offer the best conditions for cultivating different grape varieties.
Haskovo Winery is a successor of the established in 1932 Patkovi Company for production of wine. In 1947 it became a branch of the Bulgarian Spirits Monopoly. The winery became a private property in 1997. The total capacity of Haskovo Winery is 7 mil liters per year. During the last years 6 mil kg of grapes of the main varieties – Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mavrud, Pamid, Muscat, Tamianka, Dimyat and Chardonnay are vivificated in the cellars.
The ancient Thracian traditions of wine-making are kept till nowadays by Hakowo Winery. The well known wines – Merlot from Stambolovo AOC, Merlot from Sakar AOC, the high quality regional wines from the varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are a result of the combination between the favorable climate conditions, high technological achievements and old traditions. The wines mature in small oak barrels to fascinate connoisseur with their high quality, soft and harmonious taste.
